5 Useful, Free Websites

Posted by Cathryn in : Technology , trackback

The web is the best thing that ever happened to the IT project manager. Amazingly, many of the best things are free. Here are some of the ones I use regularly.

1. You’re in a meeting, and some technical types are talking nineteen to the dozen. You more or less understand what’s going on, and you don’t want to look daft or interrupt their flow when you don’t understand some of the terms. Write them down, and then look them up on Webopedia.

2. You’re about to meet a new supplier. You’ve not dealt with this company before, though you do know others in the industry. Look them up on LinkedIn. There’s a very good chance that within one or two degrees of separation, there’s someone who does know them. You’ll probably be able to see their profile, or find someone who will give you the inside story.

3. Your project team includes external suppliers, and you need to keep a some checklists, risks registers or whatever going between you. You can’t let them have access to your servers, and they can’t give you access to theirs. Your email intray is getting full with spreadsheets being sent back and forth. Put it up on Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Great for conference calls to work through a document and make changes on the fly too. Not the place for the most confidential things, of course.

4. As you move from project to project, client to client, you find yourself constantly reinventing your list of favourite websites, and forever losing that clever wee thing you found back when you did that network rollout a couple of years ago. Keep them on del.icio.us and access them from anywhere (and have a look at mine while you’re there)

5. And for those days when its all getting you down, there might just be something in here. If nothing else, its proof that some people have way too much time and technology on their hands. Sadly, that’s not something Project Managers often suffer from, but we can enjoy the results.
