Finding out about PRINCE2

Posted by Cathryn in : Project Management , trackback

I, like most freelance IT project managers in the UK, am a certified PRINCE2 Practitioner.  That means that I passed two exams, and have a reasonable grasp on the methodology.  Although I’ve never actually worked in a company that used PRINCE2 formally, I’ve found it helpful to use elements of the method, and it’s good for project managers, customers and teams to have a common language for many of the ideas and documents used around project management.

This morning, a friend who is a Business Analyst asked how she could find out about it as she’s looking at some work in a company that uses it.

I can offer her the main book, Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 (PRINCE Guidance), but its a hefty read.  A quick look for PRINCE2 books on Amazon reveals some shorter guides.

Around the web, there are a few useful sites.  It is a reflection of the way PRINCE2 is so much more important as a qualification than as a mandated methodology that so many sites with information about PRINCE2 are selling training, and I’ve not found many good ones.

The Office of Government Commerce, owner of the PRINCE2 methodology, is rather more keen on sellings its books and advertising training courses, than it is in giving information to those of us who pay their wages but does give a brief overview.

The APMG runs the certification programme, and also has a register so you can check people’s qualifications

Crazy Colour, run by a couple of PRINCE2 consultants, has much more free info than the official websites, and was one I used when I was studying for the exams.

Pearce Mayfield
, a training and consultancy firm, have a good blog with interesting PRINCE2 related entries and little advertising, so is worth a look.

If anyone reading this is aware of any better sites, please do comment.  It would be good to see some practitioners working with the methodology blogging on it.
